Capsule Endoscopy

In addition to Upper Endoscopy, we also offer Capsule Endoscopy, a revolutionary diagnostic tool particularly useful for examining the small intestine, which is difficult to reach with conventional endoscopy.

What is Capsule Endoscopy?

Capsule Endoscopy involves swallowing a capsule the size of a large vitamin pill. This capsule has a slippery coating to make swallowing easier and contains a camera, a light, a battery, and a transmitter. As the capsule travels through the digestive tract, it takes thousands of pictures and transmits them to a recorder worn on a belt around your waist. The images are later transferred to a computer and converted into a video.

What Conditions Can Capsule Endoscopy Diagnose?

Common conditions diagnosed through Capsule Endoscopy include:

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Tumors in the small intestine
  • Crohn’s disease

It can also be used to diagnose celiac disease and polyps of the small intestine.

Preparation and Procedure

Before the procedure, patients are required to:

  • Fast for 12 hours
  • Delay or avoid certain medications as instructed by your doctor

Following these instructions is crucial for obtaining clear images and avoiding the need to repeat the test.

After swallowing the capsule:

  • You can go home or to work, but strenuous activity should be avoided to ensure proper recording.
  • Clear fluids can be consumed after 2 hours.
  • A light lunch can be eaten after 4 hours.

The recorder should be removed and packed if the capsule passes in the stool or after 8 hours, whichever comes first. If you do not see the capsule in your stool, please contact your doctor.
